ICSE board is one of the three main school-level examination boards in India; the other two being CBSE and State Board. While the syllabus is more or less the same across all board, each board have their strength and specialty. For example- the CBSE board is extremely good for Science. In the same way, ICSE and ISC board is known for its English syllabus. Keep in mind, we aren’t saying that English is bad on the other board, only that it is not their specialty.

The standard of English is very high in ICSE and ISC. The syllabus is extremely tough; both, for language and literature. The question paper is high in difficulty and the marks are allotted very carefully. In this blog, we will talk about the language paper and what it mostly consists of. Let’s take a look:

ICSC Board English Language Syllabus

The paper will consist of 100 marks.

The 1st question is a basic composition question where you are expected to write an original composition of approx.. 300-350 words. You will be given 5 topics (2 descriptives, 1 for-or-against, 1 picture, 1 story writing) to choose from. The 2nd question is letter writing. You have to choose between writing a formal and an informal letter.

A 3rd question is an option between a notice or an email content. You will have 2 choices.

You will have to complete the whole paper in 120 mins.

ISC Board English Language Syllabus

This time, the paper itself will consist of 100 marks.

The 1st question is also a composition question, but this time is a higher difficulty level. You need to write an original composition of approx.. 400-450 words. Again, you will have to choose 1 topic from 5 given topics (narrative, descriptive, argumentative, reflective and discursive). The 2nd question consists of 2 parts; both being compulsory. The 1st part can be a book review, film review, report writing, etc. you need to write about 300 words on it. The 2nd part is basically a proposal writing.

The 3rd question mostly consists of grammatical questions including questions on grammatical structure and usage.

The 4th set of questions will be based on comprehension with 3-4 sub-questions.

You will have to complete the whole paper in 180 mins.
