In the last blog, we talked about two extremely important people in the history of our country. The tutors in Kolkata believe that their contribution as a teacher and altogether as a person has been priceless in shaping the country and in turn our future. In this blog, we will talk about two more such great personalities who have cemented their place our heart for their contributions as a teacher.

Savitribai Phule

In the era where women weren’t even allowed to study, she did things even most women of our generation can’t think of doing. She is a social reformist, poet and most importantly, a teacher. According to many, she is the first women teacher of India. At a time when society couldn’t think about letting the women get out of their home, she challenged every norm by opening the first school for women in the year 1848. It was located in ‘Bhide Wada’ and consisted of only a handful of students. Along with his husband, Jyotirao Phule, she taught subjects like mathematics, science and social science.

Due to her gender and also lower-caste status, she never went to school. Everything she learned, she learned from her husband. Today, we regard her as the mother of Indian feminism. Not only for women, but her role against the oppression of scheduled caste people in India also marks her name in the history of this country.

Some consider him to be the greatest teacher of ancient India and we do not disagree. Also known as Kautilya, he affected some of the greatest historical events in India. Born in the 4th century, he was the teacher of Chandragupta Maurya. According to the legends, Nanda-dynasty ruled Magadha between 343 and 321 BC. Once, King Nanda insulted Chanakya due to his ugly appearance. Infuriated, he vowed to take revenge. He saw Chandragupta, who was just a child at that time, playing in the fields. Impressed, Chanakya took him under his guidance and made him over-throw the Nanda-Dynasty. He was one of the main reasons for the rise of the Maurya Dynasty which rule for almost 150 years.

Chanakya was the professor of Philosophy, Economics and Political Science at the Takshashila University. According to many private tutors of Kolkata, his books, Chanakya Niti and Arthashastra, are one of the greatest books on political science.

They were great people who did great things and their action shaped our country into becoming what it is right now. We should have great respect for them and always try to follow their footsteps.
